Sebago
Lake lies in the heart of the Lakes Region. Native Americans were
the first to be drawn to the shores and mountains surrounding this
huge expanse of crystal clear water. They gave the lake its name,
which means “Big Stretch of Water”, and they weren’t
kidding! Measuring nearly 12 miles in length and 8 miles wide and
covering 47 square miles, Sebago is the second largest lake in Maine
and the third largest in New England. Sebago Lake is connected to
11 mile long Long Lake by “the Locks” on Brandy Pond,
which is one of the oldest hand operated locks in the country. While
summer camps, cottages and year round homes dot the many miles of
shoreline, the Sebago/Long Lake region still retains the tranquil
qualities that have touched so many for so long.
Whether
you decide to move here or just visit, the Sebago Lake/Long Lake region
is truly a four season recreational area. Spring brings the return
of the hummingbirds and loons, and fishermen return in search of the
famous “landlocked” Salmon. With summer come vacationers
and the many cottage owners to enjoy swimming, boating, fishing and
summertime activities. The fall is a beautiful time and is a sportsman’s
paradise with acres of woodland to roam. The autumn colors are spectacular,
and country fairs abound. Winter activities include ice fishing, skating,
downhill and cross-country skiing and snowmobile riding on the miles
of maintained trails.
The towns
surrounding Sebago Lake and Long Lake – Casco, Naples, Sebago,
Standish, Raymond, Windham, Harrison, and Bridgton, are all considered
commuter communities of the Greater Portland and Lewiston/Auburn areas.
The Portland Jetport is thirty minutes to an hour’s drive from
any town surrounding Sebago or Long Lake, as is Portland – the
Hub City of Southern Maine.
Portland
is located on picturesque Casco Bay. Portland is really quite small,
however it is the largest city in the state, with a population of
approximately 65,000, although the greater Portland area population
is approximately 230,000. It’s diverse population brings a The
downtown area is currently going through a wonderful rejuvenation
with L.L. Bean’s factory store at its center. The quaint Old
Port borders the working waterfront area. The old brick buildings
are filled with interesting shops and restaurants to fit anyone’s
taste and pocketbook. Culturally the city has many theater companies,
a wonderful museum as well as a terrific children’s museum.
The newly renovated City Hall Auditorium hosts many events throughout
the year and is the home to the Portland Symphony Orchestra. The Cumberland
County Civic Center is the home of the Portland Pirates Hockey Team
and is the setting for concerts, ice shows and other special events.
For baseball fans, you’ll have to catch a Maine Seadogs game
at Hadlock Field – old time fun for the whole family –
it’s affordable too, with tickets under $10.00 plus food and
drink that won’t “break the bank”.
Whether
you plan on relocating, purchasing land or a vacation property, or
if you are just visiting for a week or two, you’ll find it hard
to resist the Lakes Region of Southern Maine. It’s nearly impossible
